Dear forum friends, I would like to introduce to the third member of my little family of Sheaffers Imperial Triumph, the model VIII with long inlaid nib and touchdown filling system, with a body made of blue resin, which if we were talking about Parker would be something like a " Midnight Blue ".
Actually the pseudo-antiquarian who sold it had no idea what he was selling (he thought it was loaded by cartridge, which gives an idea of the local level in terms of antique dealers), and the fountain pen was in very poor condition (It had neither the ink sac, nor the o'ring, nor the nickel-plated sleeve to protect the ink bag and compression piston guide, and the feeder was completely clogged).
After carrying out a complete cleaning and polishing, placing the o'ring and the silicone ink sac, I had to make the protection jacket with a nickel-plated cylinder of radio antenna, I think it was quite good...
I would like to also take advantage of this presentation, to discuss the issue of the loading and ink supply capacity of the Touchdown models and among them the snorkel variety in the TM versions, since I have read that several forum participants have been surprised by the low load capacity of these models...
There are two problems here...
The first is that if the piston o'ring does not have enough tightness, the level of pressure necessary to press the ink sac to the maximum, will never be achieved...
The second problem originates from the surface tensions that exist between the ink and the ink sac surface material, accentuated by the material of the sac (the silicone makes it worse), and the slenderness of the sac (TM models) producing an ink bubble bag in the part of the sac furthest from the feeder, with the consequent cut in the feeding of the ink flow.
The solution is to assemble the ink sac with a small glass ball, to destroy the formation of the ink bubble bag with its movement and make the ink reach the feeder...
Dear friends, I hope you like the photos and the video, and the advice on ink feeding can help you...
A big greeting from Buenos Aires...!!!
Gustavo
